Description:
A rare boxed set of The Complete Ooka including Solomon in Kimono, published originally in 1956; and More Tales of Solomon in Kimono, published originally in 1957. These are the original books, not second printings, that were then collected in this boxed set. The books were published by Pacific Stars & Stripes, written by I.G. Edmonds and illustrated by Sanae Yamazaki. Master Sargeant Edmonds served 15 years in the U.S. Air Force and five years in the Far East. He wrote these stories while a feature writer with Pacific Stars and Stripes. The illustrater, Sanae Yamazaki, was the wife of another PS & S staffer, T/Sgt Sandy Colton. The box is corrogated cardboard with a paper label in pale yellow with black text and illustrations. It measures 8 ¾” x 12 ¼”. The 40 stories in collection are charming, featuring real life feudal-age judge Ooka Tadasuke, of Old Japan, known for his wisdom and commom sense judgements. His nickname is Solomon in Kimono. There are many illustrations in black and white with color washes. The stories recount Ooka’s unorthodox administration of justice, sometimes winking at the letter of the law, sometimes drawing a fine line, but always getting the right man. Condition: the book jackets are bumped on the corners; More Tales of Solomon cover has a small tear that starts on the mid-spine and continues about a ½” onto the back; Solomon has a small tear on the bottom back of the book. Bindings are tight and pages are clean and bright. More photos on request.
