Description:
J.B.B. D'ANVILLE'S SWEEPING 1794 MAP OF THE WEST INDIES Engraving with original hand color Sheet size: 20 ¾" x 35 ½" This map is based on the extraordinary work of French geographer, Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville. Published by the acclaimed late eighteenth-century British firm of Laurie and Whittle, the handsome map encompasses the lands and islands which outline the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. This region is typically referred to as "Middle America." The lands and islands of the West Indies were controlled by a number of European countries during the eighteenth century. D'Anville's map does an excellent job of demonstrating this fact in a clear and aesthetically pleasing manner. Indeed, d'Anville used six colors to symbolize whether the area in question was under the control of Spain, England, France, the Netherlands, Denmark or Sweden. Spain, England and France, however, were the most powerful colonial powers in the region. Spain controlled Florida, Mexico, the bulk of Central America and northern South America; Britain controlled two areas on the Central American mainland, Jamaica and much of the Lesser Antilles; and France ruled over Hispaniola, Guadalupe and Martinique. France's reduced holdings reflected its recent defeat in the French and Indian War. D'Anville engraved his first map at age fifteen and produced many maps of high quality throughout his career. He became the finest cartographer of his time and carried on the French school of cartography developed by the Sanson and Delisle families. Although he apparently never left the city of Paris, he had access to the reports and maps of French explorers, traders and missionaries. During his long career he accumulated a large collection of cartographic materials that has been preserved.
