Description:
A good clean copy of "The Cloud of Unknowing and Other Treatises by a 14th Century English Mystic", revised, edited and introduced by Abbot Justin McCann O.S.B., Monk of Ampleforth, and published by Burns Oates of London in 1952. The authorship of this work, sometimes attributed to Walter Hilton, is an enigma which is likely to remain unresolved. From internal evidence it is possible to say little more than that he was an Englishman, a priest, and a theologian with a wide acquaintance with earlier mystical writings, and that he wrote roughly in the period 1375 - 1400. The "Cloud" is a most powerful and appealing description of the mystical life, distinguished by many passages of great literary beauty. Yet it is a difficult work from a theological point of view, and one which is easily open to misunderstanding. Nevertheless, it remains a seminal text for those who would seek to understand the development of thought within the medieval Church. Hard covers, 220 pages, minor foxing to endpapers, original dust jacket. Ref. TCOUEAJMO1/E3. FREE DELIVERY WITHIN MAINLAND UK : FULLY INSURED WORLDWIDE SHIPPING VIA ROYAL MAIL AIR FREIGHT.
