Description: Hubert Herr began his clockmaking career around 1898 as a carver who was unique in that he also made his own movements. Later, he hired others to join him in establishing a cuckoo clock manufacturing works in Triberg (Black Forest) Germany. This remarkable example of his work bears his name stamped into the brass plate of the movement(indicating pride of workmanship---many cuckoo clock makers omitted their name), and the inscription 'GERMANY' under the numeral '6' on the dial....confirms the dating range of this clock because the McKinley Tarrif Act of 1891 required all imports to be marked as to the Country of Origin. Later, after 1914, this act was revised to require the additional words 'MADE IN' to be added to the Country of origin name. This suggests that this clock was produced by Herr before the year 1914. The brass movement is clean and operating well. Both the cuckoo and the quail sing their songs stoutly flapping their wings as they bow and open their beaks during these performances. The bellows appear to be original and are in good condition for continued service well into the future. 20 evergreen leaves and two large pine cones complete the casework carvings topped by a substantial Alpine bird on the top crown of the case. The hands and numerals are also original to the clock and other than a couple of re-glued parts on the ornamentation which are not at all noticeable as the clock hangs on the wall, this is an almost perfect presentation of Herr's reknowned work. The pendulum and cast pine cone weights are also the old originals. This is surely one really fine example of the early Black Forest clockmaking industry. As a courtesy to our cuckoo buyers, we will send a complimentary copy of the charming children's book entitled THE CUCKOO CLOCK by Mary Stolz. The lovely illustrations and delightful story in this long-out-of-printbook will enchant every cuckoo clock owner as well as their children and grandchildren.
