Claire Steinberg’s work is informed by her varied career: from picture editor at Popular Photography to stringer for People Magazine to photojournalist for Rolling Stone to teacher and designer. Her fine art work seems to blend her photojournalist’s eye for the real with an artist’s sensibility and aesthetic. Claire’s photographs are in the collections of many museums worldwide.

Thoughts on Photography by Claire Steinberg:

“Photography provides an opportunity for me to record my infatuations with life. I am captivated by images that make the trivial important, the unseen detail monumental: pictures that will sustain the unnoticed or secret moments. I look for different approaches to banal themes, and in the end, I hope that my photographs will involve and enlarge the viewers surprise, awareness, and discovery.

“A photograph ought to provoke the imagination. It should sustain thought, intrigue, and question, its suggestive quality encourages the viewer to delve into his own personal world. Both photographer and viewer enlarge their visions of life, trigger memories, perhaps stimulate dreams, and provoke their sense of wonder and emotion. As a photographer I am driven by my curiosity, which I feel is an essential ingredient in maintaining a youthful spirit. ...

"’One must begin to see things before one can commence to feel things.’ I look for the surrealism of life's conditions. Life's issues, dramas, and heartbeats all come to play in being in the moment with my camera. The resulting image is an echo. It shouts sometimes and whispers at other times.”
