CJM Stoneware Plate British Lakes Derwent Water
Description: Antique Transfer-printed Stoneware Plate of Derwent Water in "British Lakes" Series, 1829-1845, by Charles James Mason & Co. in Staffordshire. The brown transfer-printed decoration shows Derwent Water lake surrounded by mountains. Also in the scene are a rustic cottage and a man on horseback herding livestock. Derwent Water was on the itinerary of Romantic pilgrims to the Lake District. On the underside is stamped (in brown) a crown and (in descending order) the words "British Lakes," "New Stone China," "Derwentwater," and "C. J. M. & Co." The initials stand for Charles James Mason, who patented his version of ironstone china in 1813. Dimensions: 1-1/2" High, 10-1/2" Diameter. Weight: 1/2 lb. Condition: The plate is in good condition, though there are signs of wear and use. There are small nicks and chips around the rim. On the underside are two 1" chips. There is fine allover crazing visible on both sides. Not exactly museum quality but a nice souvenir of the Romantic Movement.
