Description: Beautifully engraved certificate from the CIncinnati Edison Electric Company issued in 1898. This historic document has an ornate border around it with a vignette of an allegorical woman sitting on a rocky shore with the ocean, a lighthouse, city and a generator in the background. This item is hand signed by the company’s president and secretary and is over 102 years old.
Certificate Vignette In 1837, the Cincinnati Gas Light & Coke Company was founded and soon contracted with city council to provide gas street lighting in the downtown Cincinnati area. During the late 1880's after many business and residences have installed interior gas lighting, the first significant threat to the market share appeared--electricity. Andrew Hickenlooper, a Civil War General turned company president, thought that electricity was a passing fad. However, his business sense directed his company's strategy of acquiring controlling interest in the Cincinnati Electric Company, as well as five other local electric companies, to become the dominant source of electric power in the city. As a result, the downtown area was inundated with a maze of overhead wires owned by the various companies, which led the city administrator to choose a single supplier to light the rest of the city. Cincinnati's "Light War" was initiated when the Cincinnati Edison Electric Company was awarded that major contract. After what we can only speculate ws years of delicate negotiations and heated discussion, The Cincinnati Gas Light & Coke Company and The Cincinnati Edison Electric Company merged in 1901 to create The Cincinnati Gas & Electric Company. Cinergy Corp. At A Glance Cinergy Corp. was created in October 24, 1994 from the combination of The Cincinnati Gas & Electric Company and PSI Energy, Inc., the largest electric utility in Indiana. Based in Cincinnati, Ohio, Cinergy Corp. (NYSE:CIN), is one of the leading diversified energy companies in the U.S. Its largest operating companies, The Cincinnati Gas & Electric Company (Cinergy/CG&E)(Ohio), Union Light, Heat & Power (Cinergy/ULH&P) (Kentucky), Lawrenceburg Gas (Cinergy/LG) (Indiana), and PSI Energy, Inc. (Cinergy/PSI) (Indiana), serve more than 1.4 million electric customers and 478,000 gas customers located in a 25,000-square-mile service territory encompassing portions of Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. The company’s international business unit, Cinergy Global Resources, has assets in power generation, transmission and distribution projects in the Czech Republic, Spain, the United Kingdom, Zambia, Estonia and the United States. Cinergy is also active in European gas and electricity markets. Cinergy employs approximately 9,000 employees in nine countries. Cinergy is active in U.S. power and natural gas markets and maintains a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week trading operation. In 1998, the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) selected Cinergy to be its transmission hub for Midwest electricity futures trading, which has become the most active hub in the United States. Cinergy is a registered holding company under the Public Utility Holding Company Act (PUHCA) of 1935. Cinergy's 1999 net revenues were $5.9 billion; its total capitalization is $7.4 billion, and its total assets are $10 billion. Cinergy owns or operates more than 16,500 megawatts of electrical and combined heat plant (CHP) generation that is either operational or under development. Cinergy has 55,000 miles of electric and gasd transmission lines in the U.S. and abroad. Cinergy's natural gas distribution system is connected to six interstate pipelines. The Cinergy Mission is to be one of the top five energy companies in five years in five key areas: market capitalization, number of customers, gas and electricity commodity trading, international markets and productivity—while accepting nothing less than being Number One in customer and shareholder value. This certificate has normal period markings and cancellations.
