Description: For Sale I have an Rare Wall Pocket. The pattern is "Cicada and Bamboo". The wall Pocket is 9 1/2" tall and 6 3/4" wide at its widest point. The projection from the wall is 2 1/2". The Background is a Brown Carmel Medium Gloss Glaze and is Hand Carved to look like an Old Bamboo Tree. There is a smaller Green Bamboo Sprout and Bud with Leaves. At the top of the sprout is a Cicada. These are applied to the surface of the Wall Pocket. The detail in this wall pocket and the Cicada is Awesome!! The wall pocket has 2 areas to display flowers. The first area is at the bottom right hand corner. There is a small Cylindrical Basket applied to the surface of the piece with an opening for Flowers. The second area is at the top of the vessel like most wall pockets. I thought at one time it might be Weller but a very Knowledgeable Dealer game me the low down on it below. This wall pocket is a Chinese Feng-Shui article, used to attract good luck to someone's home. Bamboo is a symbol of longevity and strength, and the Cicada is a symbol of eternal youth and happiness, and also a symbol of a joyful life after death. Ceramics of this type were widely available in shops in the Chinatowns of US cities. The incised number 7 is a giveaway that it was either made for export or made here in the US (if made in China, marks would be in Chinese numbers or characters). The 7 is either a model number or the identification number of the person who finished the piece. It would be impossible to trace the exact origin or age, but a close guess would be from 1920-1940 when Chinese articles were in great demand. It is pure good luck that it survived in good condition, & it is beautiful! The wall pocket is considered to be in excellent condition as the only issues to report is some minor crazing and a few of the points have flea nicks. The wall Pocket is signed with the number 7 incised or the Letter L. Those of you who collect Wall Pockets will not be disappointed with this one.
