Two million pounds' worth of jewellery and works of art from the collection of HRH the Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, who died in 2002, are to be sold by Christie's in June.
Estimates will range from £100 to more than £500,000. Among the highlights is the Poltimore Tiara, originally created for Florence, Lady Poltimore in the 1870s and worn by the Princess at her wedding.
The present Lord Poltimore is the UK chairman of Sotheby's, but it is unlikely his company was offered this prestigious collection for sale. The items are being sold to pay inheritance tax, and Princess Margaret's son, Lord Linley, is on the board of Christie's.
The only lot that appears to be giving Christie's problems is a portrait of the Princess by Pietro Annigoni, for which no estimate has been given. It was painted in 1957, just two years after Annigoni's most celebrated commission, the portrait of the young Queen Elizabeth II.
"Annigoni is not only the greatest artist of the century, but also able to compete on the level of the greatest artists of all time," wrote the eminent art historian, Bernard Berenson. The market has not concurred with this view, however, and the auction record for Annigoni is just £33,000. Given the subject of this portrait, that record should soon be shattered.
