Description:
This unusual combination Blanket Chest/Chest of Drawers was made in America circa 1780. It is known as a Mule Chest. We purchased it in Savannah, Georgia. The Chest is made of Pine. It has been painted a rich, Mahogany Brown that has a strong Crimson cast to it. This is a rare, early America piece. It is in good condition. The Chest has a very unusual design. It is a Mule Chest. This is a Chest / Trunk with Drawers at the base. It has a Faux Front made to look like a typical Chest of Drawers with Two Short Drawers over Four Long Drawers. However, the interior is quite different. The Top of the Chest actually lifts to reveal a roomy Secret Compartment which is quite deep. It allows for a great deal of functional storage. The Two Deep Drawers at the bottom function. These have gorgeous Dove Tail Joints, which indicate the high quality of the Cabinet Maker. The Scalloping Back Plate and Bale Handles are all original. The Hinges and Support for the lid are newer. The Mule Chest is raised upon Bracket Feet. WE HAVE MENY MORE PHOTOS OF THIS MULE CHEST. PLEASE CONTACT US AND WE WILL BE HAPPY TO SEND THEM TO YOU!
