Huard, Charles (Paris, 1875 - Poncey-sur-l'Lignon, 1965). Charles Huard: A well known French lithographer, etcher and illustrator, Charles Huard first worked in Paris for journals such as Le Rire and La Journal amusant. By 1900 he had emerged as a leading illustrator and was constantly commissioned by publishers. Such fine illustrated books as Clemenceau's, Figures de Vendee and Flaubert's, Bouvard et Pecuchet are from his hand as well as the monumental complete works of Balzac. Through popular books such as these Huard gained his reputation as a prime delineator of everyday life.

Original lithography and etching also occupied much of Huard's artistic oeuvre. He initially studied etching techniques under Eugene Bejot in Paris. His first published prints date from the turn of the century and from that time until the beginning of the First World War most of his fine etchings and lithographs concentrated upon views of cities and towns in both France and Germany. Markt zu Falaise, published in 1904, is a fine example of his art from this period.

During the First World War (1914-1918) Charles Huard served as an artist for the French government. The etchings and lithographs he made of French military life within the war zones provide an important and lasting record of these momentous times.

Vervielfaltigende Kunst: During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries leading art journals around the world published original etchings, lithographs and woodcuts on a regular basis. Some of the greatest prints from this vital era were commissioned and published by The Studio, in London, Pan, in Germany, The Print Connoisseur, in America and Vervielfaltigende Kunst, in Vienna.

Vervielfaltigende Kunst issued it first original etching in 1871. During the following sixty years it published masterworks by Austrian, German, Czech, Swiss, French, Dutch and English artists. More internationally focused and less conservative than most of its rival publishers, Vervielfaltigende Kunst became a spearhead for the vibrant experiments of Symbolist, Expressionist and Secessionist artists during the initial decades of the twentieth century. Also, its superb printing techniques were second to none. As a result, Vervielfaltigende Kunst is now regarded as a most vital fine art publisher of its day and individual prints from this publication are eagerly sought after on the international market.
