Description:
Here is a spectacular carved wood and gold gilded framed mirror. It dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century. The carving is superb and well defined encompassing a multitude of foliate swirls and shells. The top cartouche or crest is an outstanding cornucopia of fruit flanked by two putto – who I assume are two of the four seasons. The mirror ends with bold superior pierced carved shell. The gold gilding is in a remarkable state of preservation with some high and low burnishing. The mirror is beveled and is quite heavy. It is in very good condition – having a little spot or two – but when it comes to a mirror of this age this should be considered fantastic. It is quite substantial in weight and size measuring overall 41”h x 26 ¾”w and the mirror sight size measures 21 ¼” x 17 3/8”.
