Description: A carved coral cameo surrounded by clusters of grapes, set in an 18ct gold frame, Italian c.1940. This is the Red coral, as opposed to the more common Pink coral. Evidently this is the older variety, which is getting increasingly scarce due to over-farming and pollution. The cameo is a frontal image of a female face with very Italian features, against a background of grape clusters and vines. The entire scene is deeply carved with high relief. The scroll-adorned frame is fashioned in 18 ct gold (unmarked but tested), with a gold-plated pin (not unusual as a metal pin is less resilient to bending when the brooch is worn). Dimensions: 2" x 1.13".
