Description:
Important pamphlet, 8 ½” x 5 ¾”, 23 pages of letters of Maj. Gen. Zachary Taylor, campaign songs and anecdotes plus 12 pages of advertisements. Approximately 30 letters and dozens of songs reprinted. Front cover worn with a one inch piece missing from the border. Back cover missing. Pages are intact and very readable. Obviously a successful campaign piece as Taylor was elected twelfth President of the United States in 1848, a nominee of the Whig Party. A fine piece of Whig history.
This item offers a wonderful glimpse into the history of that day. In small part: in one letter, Taylor replies “…If nominated by the Whig National Convention, I shall not refuse acceptance, provided I am left free of all pledges, and permitted to maintain the position of independence of all parties in which the people and my own sense of duty have placed me—otherwise I shall refuse…
“Secondly—I do not design to withdraw my name if Mr. Clay be the nominee of the Whig National Convention…It has not been my intention, at any moment, to change my position—or to withdraw my name from the canvass, whoever may be the nominee of the National Convention, either of the Whig or Democratic Party.” Much more.
Known as “Old Rough and Ready,” Taylor had a 40-year military career in the Army. He served in the War of 1812, Black Hawk War and Second Seminole War after achieving fame while leading troops to victory at several critical battles of the Mexican-American War. He was a Southern slaveholder who opposed the spread of slavery.
Taylor died of acute gastroenteritis 16 months into his term. Vice President Millard Fillmore succeeded him as President.
