Description: If quartz watches had not been invented the cognoscenti would all be wearing Bulova "Accutrons" since they were the most accurate watches made in the 1960's and 1970's before the advent of the quartz movement. The movements were engineering marvels that used an electrically pulsed tuning fork to very accurately parse the seconds of the day. This particular Accutron is the "Astronaut" model, a very sought after piece of history. In 1960 NASA requested Bulova to incorporate the "Accutron" technology into the space program and they obliged with relish. The Accutron has completed no less than 46 missions. On one of those missions, in 1969, an "Accutron" movement was placed on the moon's Sea of Tranquility as part of the instrumentation put there by Apollo 11 astronauts who were the first men on the moon. This particular "Astronaut" is in great condition and may be one of the nicest we've ever had. The case is all stainless steel and shows only very minor handling wear. The black dial is darn near perfect and still has a nice glow in the dark effect when you turn out the lights. The case size is 38mm in diameter by 40mm lug to lug, thanks to the adjustable, 24 hour bezel for "around-the-world" orbits in your space capsule. There is also an extra hand that revolves once every 24 hours for GMT time. Thus the watch may be set for any two time zones on the planet and it can also measure elapsed time while displaying both local and Greenwich mean time simultaneously. This watch originally was engineered to be waterproof and shock resistant and although we do not warranty them to be waterproof this one is well sealed against moisture and debris. This "Astronaut" was made in 1966 and well cared for over the 41 years of it's life. We have fitted it with a nice black Wild Alligator Grain band for your wearing pleasure. Remember all of our timepieces come with our famous one year warranty for parts and labor so that you may buy with confidence.
