Description:
British Fresh Water Fishes by Rev. W. Houghton
Rev Houghton was a fellow of the Linnaean Society of London and a serious naturalist. For this work, he enlisted the collaboration of Benjamin Fawcett and Alexander Lydon. The antique colored wood engravings in the series are based on specimens in the collection of the British Museum. The partnership between Fawcett and Lydon was a uniquely successful one -- combining the artistic talent of Lydon with the printing expertise of Fawcett. The examples in this series are notable for placing the fish in a naturalistic setting, sometimes swimming, sometimes sunning themselves near the river bank. This edition, printed in 1879, was so popular that it was reprinted many times far into the next century. The large size of the plates makes them very suitable for framing.
