Description:
On the original White Studio mount. Names of the sitters (Rice and Prevost) and Brooklyn, NY address written on the back of the mount. The White Studio was the leading theatrical photographer in New York City from ca 1900-1930s. Founded by Luther White, the studio was best known in the 1890s for its portraiture. With the development of flashlighting in the early 1900s, this expanded to include theater, music, dance, opera and circus productions. Their photographs document one of the richest and most productive periods in the history of commercial theater and the performing arts in the United States. From 1904-1936, the White Studio photographed over 85% of all live theater performance in New York City. (source: New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, 1995).
