New York Appleton 1841.Octavo,original gilt & blind -stamped brown cloth: First Edition of “One of the earliest accounts of the Sperm Whale Industry” Illustrated with 12 Lithographs :Scarce only 7 Copies known to exist (at the time this info was catalogued by the book seller ,I have just completed a new search & I find no copies at all) Olmstead was a passenger on the Whale Ship “North America” traveling throughout the Pacfic, visiting & describing a number of Islands & they’re Inhabitants, Including the Azores, Cape Horn ,The Sandwich Islands, Hawaii & Tahiti.Olmstead discusses at length the history of whaling ,the varieties of Whales, the methods of attacking & capturing whales, as well as the life of the whaler & the whaling industry as a whole. The condition is as you would expect with a good amount of foxing on every page .For me it is an amazing feeling to just look at this book & realize that this very volume was created 168 years ago & still survives today ,what a monumental undertaking this must have been & what a brave & curious man this was to want & feel the need to document this information for future generations. I feel certain that this would be a very important acquisition for the serious Nautical Library.
