Description:

Bobo Gurunsi 32" Hyena Antelope Headdress Mask
Antique African Art Tribal Sculpture Burkina

A Stunning Bobo Gurunsi Hyena Antelope Headdress Helmet Mask
Antique African Art Traditional Tribal Sculpture - Burkina Faso

Collected from the: Bobo peoples, formerly Bobo Ule (Red Bobo) of Burkina Faso, West Africa. Similar specimens have been attributed to the Nuna (Gurunsi) of the same region.
Material: Wood, pigment
Period: Mid 20th century
Dimensions: 32" height, 7.5" width, 8" depth; weight is 4.00 pounds
Condition: Excellent - good signs of age, wear at edges and interior from tribal use. Meticulously carved from a single piece of indigenous wood with intricate multi-dimensional geometric designs and zoomorphic motifs; painted on BOTH sides. Upper tip of left horn exhibits an interesting indigenous repair, tip of right horn was lost to time and/or use, juding from the consistent patination present, both areas test completely stable with no further loss anticipated. Gorgeous patina on all areas of exposed wood with all nicks and scuffs presenting consistent patination. This superb carving exhibits meticulous attention to detail, surface condition and patina indicate piece is at least 30 years of age or greater. Minute age cracks test stable, presenting no further threat to the structural integrity of this mask. Multiple layers of paint indicate this mask has been the beneficiary of the region's traditional annual swamp soak and reconditioning, which speaks volumes for the high regard the Bobo placed on this respected older 'hyenalope' - exquisite ! The symmetry and precision of the carving on this piece are especially captivating when one considers that only the most primitive of tools were available to the carver, a fine example of old Bobo art and an obvious work of a master carver who was highly skilled at executing complicated design. Similar masks are depicted in Animals in African Art. and Man and His Vision.

Please to fully appreciate this delightful piece!
