Description:
BOBO BUFFALO MASK Burkina Faso, Koudougou region; previously, Upper Volta; The country of masquerades. With the overall population exceeding seven million, sixty ethnic groups, the twelve largest of which are renowned for their prolific mask production. Primarily carved from the softwood of the cotton tree, the masks are conditioned annually with a good “swamp soak” to prevent or rid infestation, then repainted with the traditional white, blank, red, and brown pigments. Masquerades are typically performed during the dry season which varies slightly throughout the region. Wood Sculpture of Burkina Faso, and even Animals in African Art cross-attribute similar mask designs to the Mossi, the area’s dominant group comprising one third of the population; the Nunuma and the Nuna, which are often lumped into a group most commonly referred to as the Gurunsi consider this a pejorative term; and the Bobo, the most dominant group among the Mende-speakers of the West.
