Description:
Here is an eight-sided plate by Cauldon in the Arcadian Chariots pattern. The plate measures
8-7/8" across. Petra Williams thinks this may be a re-issue of a pattern done earlier by John Ridgway, Bates & Co., or Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co., since Cauldon was a successor company to these firms. The center image is in the Classical style, with a chariot in the center. It is drawn by a black horse, and a white horse. Tall trees are at the left, and a columned temple is at the right. A lake is in the middle distance, with mountains and buildings beyond. The border is a combination of acanthus designs in a triangle, stylized stems and a background of small, tightly spaced circles. The condition is excellent. There are no chips, cracks, or repairs. Mild crazing is visible on close inspection, but there is excellent surface on the glaze. Slight toning of color is on the underside.
