Description:
A delightful and extremely rare sterling silver child's chamberstick. Sometimes called "go-to-beds", these small candlesticks were intended to hold small candles and to be portable so they could be carried through a darkened house on the way to bed in the evening. The base of the holder is engraved with an especially appropriate Mother Goose nursery rhyme and with nicely rendered illustrations--"Come let's to bed, Says Sleepy-head; Sit up awhile, Says slow; Put on the pan, Says Greedy Nan, Let's sup before we go." The bottom is hallmarked by Blackinton Silver Company and has the design number 7979.
Origin: America, ca. 1920. Condition: very good; one pinpoint ding on the base (more visible from the underside than from the top) and two creases (1/8" and 1/4") in the drip catcher. Size: 5" diameter; 1-1/2" tall. Weight: 102.0 grams.
