Table of Contents

This book highlights the Texas tradition of bit and spur making, the flashy and practical artwork produced by more than 60 artisans active between 1870 and 1970.

The origins of the Texas style are traced in the history of bits and spurs brought to the New World from England, France and Spain. Pictured are pieces which can be dated from archeological finds as well as from superb Spanish Colonial collections.

Resurrected from blacksmith shops in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, New Mexico and Arizona are portraits of not only the well known masters such as Johnson, Kelly, Crockett, McChesney and the Boones, but also lesser-known, but equally skilled makers such as Weast, Strong, Stephenson and many others.

Pictured among the 700 stunning photographs of bits and spurs are many one-of-akind pieces never seen outside of private collections. Photographs were taken of some 70 different private and museum collections.

For the researcher and the collector, there is an extensive glossary and bibliography as well as useful appendices on restoration and pricing. Along with its companion volume, Bit and Spur Makers in the Vaquero Tradition, this book completes the story of western bitand-spur makers in America.
