Table of Contents

Biscuit Tins is a fascinating book which documents the decorative, imaginative and frequently beautiful examples of some of the earliest marriages of art and commerce - a partnership that has evolved into the multi-million pound industry of packaging and advertising that endures today.

It also reflects a time when British manufacturing was world-renowned.

Although examples of decorated tin exist before 1868, the advent of the printed biscuit tin heralded a new era in decorative packaging. These tins represented some of the earliest-known point-of-sale items. The designs were carefully researched and reflected current art trends and themes, as well as evervdav objects such as postboxes, hand bags and vehicles.

Famous artists such as Mabel Lucie Attwell and Owen Jones were employed, but the majority of the skilled designers remain unknown.

With the previous edition changing hands for as much as 150, a reprint of this book is much needed and has long been awaited.
