Description: This vintage print was produced between 1923 and 1930 - during the Golden Age of Travel. It was produced by Putnik Travel, founded in Belgrade in 1923, still in existence today. The piece reads: Jugoslavia - Informations by Putnik - Beograd - And The Leading Tourist Offices. At the very bottom of the piece in the white border surrounding the image are two words in cursive red ink, appears to say "Bpene Teoipag" - although I could not find any meaning for this. The subject is an Islamic man wearing a Fez and traditional costume holding a pipe, looking out towards what can be assumed to be the only preserved mosque in Belgrade, Bayraklee Mosque (Bajrakli džamija) - which is still standing today. Check out a picture here of the mosque: (http://www.tob.co.yu/english/zasto_bg/sveti_bg/ostali/index.html) In between the man and the mosque is an old European automobile - at the time, what would have been a very expensive automobile although I cannot pinpoint the car make. This piece wonderfully captures the curiosity and excitement of foreign travel to exotic places with exotic people that travel posters of the era conveyed. In addition to the dissolution of Yugoslavia and Kosovo declaring its independence from Serbia adding a historical dimension to this piece, the scarcity of travel posters from the Balkans makes this a particularly rare piece. I have not yet come across another one. Condition: Fair. The piece appears to be a lithograph but could be a wood block print. It is professionally backed on linen with at least 1.5 " border of linen all the way around. The colors are bright and crisp. There is vertical crease in the center from someone who poorly rolled this piece a long time ago. The professional linen backing significantly reduced the appearance of this vertical crease although it is still there. There are various other small creases in different places - most creases have small losses of color in these areas. There were two small edge tears that had been mitigated with tape placed on the back of the poster (on bottom and on side) but this was removed when it was professionally backed. Please ask if you want more detailed photos. I have before linen backing and after photos.
