Description:
Truly outstanding & completely outrageous Bed. American 19th Century. Made of a wonderful rich & mellow mahogany. This bed has so much going for it, I hardly know were to start in describing it! It is a full size bed with the Half Tester (canopy) measuring 8’7” high. The tester has great carved molding & incised carving on the skirt underneath of it with the bold barley twist posts. The head board has four inset panels that have a simple line brass string inlay on each. The foot board has a central panel that is deeply carved with the face of the north wind. Spindles under the top rail with a panel matching the head board panels on each side of the north wind. The bottom posts have a carved full body owl on each side. Can you believe this bed? This bed is in magnificent condition, no damage or repairs & strictly perfect. The surface patina is so rich & mellow, nice & clean. The measurements are as follows: Tester 8’7” high Testers overhang 3’ Overall length 6’11” Overall width 5’ Inside mattress 76” Long x 55” Wide Foot Board Top of Owls to Floor 55” I believe that I can safely attribute this bed to the maker of Kimbel & Cabus of New York. In the reference book “American Furniture of the 19th Century by Eileen & Richard Dubrow” on page 185 it is a revolving bookcase with all aspects of the same work & carved owl on top.
