Description:
In the mid-1800s when oak furniture was just beginning to become popular, the dark woods (mahogany, walnut, and rosewood) were considered to be "rich peoples' furniture". Largely manufactured by hand, these pieces were painstakingly created by skilled craftsmen even into the early years of the 20th century. Found once in a lovely, old home in one of the original states of the South, and most recently moved from a circa 1900 home in East Texas, we now offer for sale this outstanding Renaissance Revival walnut bed. American Victorian Furniture; the best of the best! At approximately 80" tall and appropriately crowned by a large scrolled cartouche-styled rosette, this incredible American Victorian Renaissance Revival bed, circa 1870, is constructed of walnut with burl walnut contoured panels. Each burl panel is either raised or indented with the indented ones being outlined by beautifully, carved trim. This museum quality bed was made by one of the prominent cabinet makers of the period, possibly Pottier & Stymus, Herter, Jelliff, or Roux. Note the thick, curved footboard with its large, center cartouche-styled rosette and other detailed carvings. With some slight restoration work, the condition of the piece appears very good. The finish appears be original and in very good shape with a few dings and scuffs that are appropriate for the age of the piece. The inner measurements are about 60* wide and 76* long. The purchaser of this lovely bed will be given a custom-made mattress and box springs set that was created for this bed by the Tyler Mattress Company. The bed has been in one of our guest rooms for a few years. This room is used only occasionally. Additional measurements: Footboard - 30" tall; side rails, 24" wide where they join the headboard, 12" wide down the sides.
