Description:
This nineteenth century bronze figurine depicts the Greek mythological hero, Narcissus, after the original by the Italian sculptor, Vincenso Gemito (1852-1929) which was cast in the 1880s. It was cast by Barbedienne and measures 25" tall and 9.5" wide and deep. A Narcissus was a hero from the territory of Thespiae in Boeotia who was renowned for his beauty. In various stories he was said to be exceptionally cruel in disdaining those who loved him. As divine punishment he fell in love with a reflection in a pool, not realizing it was his own. This item resides with our client in northern New Jersey and may be seen in person by appointment. Additional images forwarded upon request.
