Description: Barbed wire was first patented in 1868 by Michael Kelly of New York. Between 1868 and 1900, 756 patents were issued for various types. Since many manufacturers did not bother with patents, there are likely over 1000 type that can be collected. Forms of the basic wire include single strand, double strand, multiple strand and ribbon. The barbs were either attached to the body in the form of small sharp plates or small twisted wire segments,or made directly from the body as in the case of some types of ribbon wire. This sample is known as Brinkerhoff Ribbon Wire. It was found in a wooded area not far inland in mid coast Maine. It is about 4 ft long and dates to the late 19th century.
