Description: The largest ethnic group in Mali, the Bambara are abou 2.5 million strong in the western and southern portions of Mali, with their area disected by the Niger river. This sculpture is one that would be enshined to Gwan by a society of women with fertility and childbearing problems. They are brought out for public ceremonies depicting family groups including mother and child, father and pregnant women figures.
