Description:
The Baga is now a small tribe numbering only about 60,000 in the northern coast of Guinea and southern coast of Guinea-Bissau. The snake, an emblem of the Bansonyi, a men's secret society, represents a python. This powerful group lives in the sacred forest and comes out at the begining of boys' coming-of-age rites, as well as other important tribal functions. Many of these snake carvings are much larger and carried by the dancers while this piece was worn as a headdress with rafia hanging around the body of the dancer. It has red and black polychrome design with carved geometric design and carved eyes. Displayed on the display stand it is 23 inches at the highest end. It will freestand as well measuring 29 inches long.
