Description:
This is an extremely fine, English Victorian Compactum. We purchased it in London, England. It is made of Mahogany and has a rich, Medium Mahogany Patina. This piece of furniture is referred to as a Gentleman's Compactum. In the Victorian Era, these were commissioned from a cabinet maker by a gentleman of wealth to house his wardrobe. This one is extremely fine. It has a beautifully formed Pediment which follows the pronounced center of the Compactum. The central section consists of Double Doors over Five Graduated Drawers. The Double Doors open to reveal a roomy interior with a Shelf flowing across the center. This is the perfect place for storing folded articles of clothing or storing cosmetics and jewelry. Just below is a gorgeous Open Display Shelf with a lovely Cathedral Arch flowing across the top. It is a very attractive display area. Beneath it are Two Short Drawers over Three Long Drawers. Their graduated design, with the more slender Drawers at the top, graduating in size to the deepest below, is an indication of a very fine Cabinet Maker. The intricate Dove Tail Joints confirm it. The Drawers have roomy interiors. Flanking them are full length Doors. They are mirrored. The Mirrors are deeply beveled. Opening the Right Hand Door reveals a roomy interior with a Clothing Rail running horizontally across the center. There are also Six Victorian Clothing Hooks flowing around the interior for additional storage. The Door on the left opens to reveal functional interior with a Shelf flowing across the top. Below is an unusual Clothing Rail which flows back to front. It has a clever mechanism which allows it to be drawn forward so that you can more easily access your clothing. There are Six Victorian Clothing Hooks flowing around the interior. This is a splendidly functional piece of furniture. The Hardware is all original. This includes the gorgeous Victorian Escutcheons, Locks, Skeleton Key as well as the opulent, Pierced Back Plates and Bale Handles on the Drawers. The Compactum rests upon a Plinth Base. The piece comes apart into five pieces so it can easily be moved and shipped. This includes the Crown, each of the three sections across the center, and the Plinth Base. This is a magnificent English Victorian Gentleman's Compactum. If you are a collector of rare antique furniture, you will find this spectacular piece irresistible.
