Description:
This large, oval, gold plated, velvet lined jewelry box was produced by the Apollo Studios during the early 1900s (Apollo opened in 1909 and closed in 1922) . Featuring intricately embossed and filigree open metalwork with additional applied adornment of flowers and leaves in skillful openwork gold plated brass on the top of the hinged lid with a centered large oval amber color faceted glass jewel that is prong set with the prongs in the shape of tiny flowers. The floral foliage theme is represented on the top, sides and four feet, and the edging is again intricately embossed metalwork. The inside is lined in immaculate burgundy velvet. Measures 10 1/2 inches long x 6 1/2 inches deep x 3 1/2 inches tall. The inside is 2 inches deep and each of the four feet is 3/4 of an inch high. The central glass jewel is 1 3/4 x 1 1/4 inches with only light wear to the metal. The inside velvet is spotless. The base is engraved with the APOLLO mark and the condition is excellent. A similar antique Apollo jewelry box is shown on page 26 of Antique Dresser Sets 1890s-1950s by Roseann Ettinger (2005)
