Description: Nice large oil painting by Anton Gutknecht of what looks to be a European countryside. Nice movement and a great feeling of depth with the spire of the church soaring skyward. Condition is overall good with no tears but the are many small scratches or scrapes in the paint. Still a very desirable painting he has sales to $2,000 and many listings. Nice California listed artist. Measures 32 x 24" out of frame and 36" x 29" with the frame. Circa 1940.

Anton Gutknecht was born in Dusseldorf, Germany in 1907 and died in 1988. He studied in Dusseldorf, Munich, and Hamburg, and instructed for many years at Vienna's Royal Academy before moving to southern California where he settled in Palm Springs.

Gutknecht has traveled extensively over the world, painting a wide variety of subjects. His works have won prizes in international competitions in Vienna, Paris, Rome, Naples, and Venice. His paintings are a mixture of realism with an idealistic beauty. Some of his Southern California scenes were reproduced as commercial prints.

A 1980 book published by Foster Art Books titled "Painting Landscapes and Seascapes" by Anton Gutknecht" brought him recognition in the United States. He died in Dusseldorf, where he had returned shortly before his death in 1988.
