Description: Rare Antique Victorian brass Man-in-the-Moon vesta - match safe or match holder. Made circa 1870-1900.

Approx 2 inches long; weighs approx 20 grams.

Exceptional form and workmanship: outside is a semicircle or crescent with the inside a repousse and engraved brass Man in the Moon, with big green glass eyes with black pupils. The long, curved nose, sensuous mouth with detailed teeth and scrolling brows, echoing the scrolls of foliage that form his hairline and beard. WEll made, sturdy hing - grab his fringe (bangs) to open. The back has parallel indentations used to strike a match.

Unmarked. Very good condition.
