Description:
A classic and very hard to find Tibetan short sword dating to the
19th century, with accompanying scabbard. Single edged,
15inch (38cm) blade with thick spine, leather wrapped wooden
handle of flattened rectangular cross section, flattened trefoil
brass pommel with peened over full tang. Traditional Tibetan
brass guard. Wooden core scabbard wrapped with the traditional
U-shaped full iron chape, pierced, chased, overlaid in gold with
Tibetan and Chinese designs. Most of the gold overlay now worn
away. Sometime during its working life in the 20th century, the
scabbard was modified to include panels of corduroy fabric over
the wood, and a saffron sash near the throat. Overall measuring
21 inches (54cm), this lovely piece is in good condition, and
exhibits extensive wear, as seen in the photos. Tibetan arms
were rarely retired from age, and photos from around the time
of the Younghusband 'Expedition' of 1903 show
warriors wearing full lamellar armor and weapons from the 16th
century. For similar examples refer to "Warriors of the
Himalayas: Rediscovering the Arms and Armor of Tibet" by
Donald LaRocca.
