This is a very handsome example of a Vesta case match safe designed by the silversmiths of Birmingham, England, and it is perfect in style and usefulness. Curving scroll work is deeply engraved on a diagonal on both the front and back.
The lid is in perfect condition with a hardy snap closure, and the bottom strike is intact. Added to the design is a side jump ring so the Vesta can be added to a gentlemen’s Albert Chain..
We have left the sterling silver toned so as not to take away from the look of its antiquity, and history.
The invention of the friction match, deemed hazardous and know to explode without provocation, gave rise to the design and manufacture of small fireproof containers to carry them safely. Throughout the Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian periods these pocket match safes were designed in may unique shapes and were made of many different metals such as gold, silver and brass. They eventually fell out of favor during the 1930s when people became content to use paper books of safety matches.
