Description:
Outrageous Antique stoneware stein! It is monumental in size measuring 16 1/4" high with a base diameter of 6 1/2". Impressed Mark on the bottom Germany and the numbers 1315. I don’t profess to know everything about steins but I feel this one is quite unusual in that it Looks and Feels more like Majolica than stoneware! The lines are as flowing as any art nouveau porcelain item I’ve ever seen! The base color of the central scene is a deep eggplant color and the scene is something of a wedding or engagement party with people socializing. The central bottom scene base color is of a deep forest green with a chalet nestled in the mountains. On either side of that there are two portraits - one of an older woman and one of an older man. The detail here is fine and intricate. Every inch of the stein is ornately covered. The colors are bold and vivid – making it very difficult to put down. Loosely translated the inscription across the top reads - Health & Happiness are better than much money and worldly goods. The stein is marked 3L on the top near the handle. The pewter top is nicely designed and just a wee bit off kilter. It could be made perfect with a little gentle persuasion! The condition is excellent and dates pre 1914.
