Description: An extra heavt and fine quality sugar shaker. Of urn shape, the detachable cover chased with gadrooning and pierced with floral motifs, cast and molded gadroon border,the lower section of body chased with gadrooning, the whole raised on spreading pedestal foot. 13.5 troy ozs. height 8 3/4". Sugar castors have been popular in England since the early 18th century. They were used for sprinkling sugar over fruit. Both were precious and expensive commodities at that time. Only the very rich could afford sugar, and therefore, castors in the 18th century were only found in homes of the wealthy. By the mid-nineteenth century, castors were seen in homes of the merchant class.
