Description:
This is a very sophisticated and spectacular 19th century classical sewing stand with highly figured rich mahogany accompanied by full gold gilt and ebony contrasts. This extremely elegant stand has a maple fitted interior compartment. The knobs on the lids of the compartments are whale ivory and there is a mirror on the underside of the lift top. The pull out storage or yarn bin is carved wood, with highly figured mahogany veneer - which is unusual because most of these storage compartments were made of fabric. There is also one drawer above the bin. This stand is in a remarkable state of preservation, the gilding is superb, the turnings and carvings are precise, yet delicate, and the patina is rich and lustrous. Circa about 1830’s -1840’s. It could quite possibly be of Philadelphia origin. It measures 30 ½” high x 20 ¼”wide x16”deep.
