Description:
This tremendous faience jardiniere in the Chinoiserie style by Sarrreguemines measures an impressive 29.5" high, 26" wide and 22" deep (74.9, 66.0 & 55.9 cm), and is believed to date from the 1870s to 1880s. It features elaborate foo dog (foo lion) masks and dolphins or sea serpents in high relief. Its dominant glazed colors are golden yellow and brown, and turquoise blue, and there is a hint of forest green and blue-green. The underside carries the impressed "SARREGUEMINES" mark in capitals and the style number "902". This is the largest Sarreguemines piece we have ever seen, and it weighs an estimated 80-110 lbs. Condition is excellent. The only flaws include a small chip from the underside of the nose of one foo dog, a chip from the top of one blue-glazed scroll, a repaired flake chip along the side of the base, a small chip at the shoulder of the base, a small unglazed area measuring 1/4" across on the side, and one visible hairline on one of the applied decorations. There is no drain hole and the inside is clean. This item resides in our client's gallery on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City and may be seen in person by appointment.
