Description:
Almost identical to the basket on the cover of the Japanese flower basket bible, "Containing Beauty: Japanese Bamboo Flower Baskets" , this antique Japanese basket is a classic example of one of the the main insertion techniques employed in the Meiji Era (c.1867-1912). Called 'midare' in Japanese, the technique involves inserting wide strips diagonally into the body. The rim has been constructed using the 'tomobuchi technique' whereby the bamboo body strips are continued upward to form the rim. The handle is made from a root and lacquered. Made at the height of basket making in the Meiji Period. c.1890. (16" x 10") (42cm x 25cm). EMS Shipping/Insurance to USA or Western Europe $65.
