Description:
Antique Sultanabad, Persia, late nineteenth century -
This magnificent antique Sultanabad rug really stands out within its type. In place of the customary palmettes and vines as an allover network or as a central medallion design, this example has a series of see-through medallions that almost look Khotan or Tibetan, and they are arranged as separate forms in an allover floating arrangement like Sarouk carpets, which were produced in the nearby region. But the Sultanabad tradition emerges clearly in the rich coloration of the carpet with terracottas and burnt orange alongside a variegated range of blue shades. The small-scale jewel-like border of cartouches and addorsed scrolls offers a nice contrast to the larger more open forms of the field.
The term Sultanabad has come to distinguish the oldest and highest quality Mahal carpets which were produced in the Arak region. They are also known as Ziegler Mahals, named for an Austrian firm that supervised their production for export to the West. Sultanabad rugs were made in the same area as the earliest Farahans and Sarouks, but they are very different. Ultimately, they share a common classical Persian repertory of floral motives, whether they utilize medallion or overall designs of vinescrolls and palmettes. But Sultanabad rugs & carpets tend to have a larger, more supple weave and accordingly a bolder, more large scale drawing. Indeed the drawing of Sultanabads resembles that of Herizes or Serapis somewhat in its graphic and monumental character, but even so it is always more curvilinear and classical. Sultanbad carpets also often have a rich, warm palette like that of Farahans and the earliest Sarouks.
