Description:
This is a one of a kind, antique burl mortar, with a very nice ceramic and wood handle pestle! The mortar is in very nice condition, made from an unique piece of hardwood burl! As you can see is does have some grain separations, and some of the lathe turning area show signs of "tear-out" (when small fragment of the burled wood tear away from the main turning because of the way the unique grain changes directions), but the just adds character to this wonderful primitive piece of art! It is useable, no through cracks, and the radius in the inside bottom matches that of the outside radius on the ceramic end of the pestle! The mortar is very heavy for it's size as burl hardwood is more dense in most cases than a standard grain piece. It weighs 4 pounds alone, and the pestle is also heavy at about 14 ounces. The mortar is 6" diameter x 6" tall. The pestle is 9.75" long x about 2" diameter on the largest end. It appear that the pestle was a production made piece, most likely from the later 1800's era, the ceramic is in perfect condition very little wear or staining, very well attached to the hardwood handle. The handle section again has a few grain separations in it, but is super solid, with a matching patina (finish color) to the mortar. One nice thing about this match is that the pestle with matching end shape and heavy ceramic end with actually stand up perfectly straight inside the mortar, as the base is weighted by the ceramic and the two pieces were made to fit together for excellent pulverizing functionality. A very beautiful primitive set overall!
