Description:
19th. century Moroccan dagger koumiya with nice hand chiseled and chased silver on the scabbard, pommel and hilt. Brass scabbard with the overlay silver ornaments. The chape is in shape of a horse head, chiseled in silver. The koumya is the Moroccan version of the Arabic dagger jambyia. The dagger's silver decorations are intricate with a stylized floral design. Some chaffing is present on the silver ornaments as well as indentations on the scabbard's brass lining. The suspending rings probably were re-attached as some soldering signs are visible at the edge of the scabbard. The handle is made from wood and has a coiled copper wire in the center that facilitates the grip. Interestingly, the blade is much older than the dagger and probably originates from an original medieval Spanish or Arabic dagger. It is quite worn with age depressions and indentations, however, it is visible that the blade has a ricasso and becomes double edged in the mid-portion. Because of the wear, the blade is almost straight and missing the traditional curvature that usually starts in the mid-portion of the blade. The pommel has chiseled curved silver on top of the wooden hilt. In the reverse side, the chiseled silver is present on the edges and has a brass background in the center.
