Antique Japanese Gilt Lacquer Box w/ Inlaid Fish C.1900
Description: Antique Japanese Gilt Lacquer Box w/ Inlaid Fish, Late 19th-Early 20th C. Japan. The rectangular form box features a hinged cover with recessed panel inlaid with carved bone fish, branches, flowers, lily pads and a small engraved cartouche plaque on a mottled green/black lacquer ground. The borders of the cover and surface of the box are decorated with gilt and painted floral pattern on a red lacquer ground. The interior has a speckled gold/copper/black lacquer finish. The hinged lid features a lock (stamped with small circular mark) and keyhole to the front. Dimensions: 10-1/4" Wide, 7-1/8" Deep, 3-1/4" High. Weight: 1.15lbs. (19oz.) Condition: There are a number of loses to the inlaid bone pattern along the surface of the cover (including one fish, the eye of a second fish, several leaves and a small flower and lily pad). The border along the right side of the cover is peeling up (at the lower right corner) and there are some chips/losses to the lacquer along the edges of the crack/seam. The key escutcheon and key to the lock are missing and the hinges to the cover are slightly loose. There is considerable rubbing/wear to the pattern along the surface of the box (primarily along the sides) with some cracks and chips/losses to the lacquer (primarily along the corners and edges of the box and cover). There is some scratching/wear to the underside of the base with some cracks and chips/losses to the black lacquer along the back edge. Otherwise, the box is in fair condition.
