Description:
Traditional Japanese costume does not have pockets so accessories are carried in specially made containers, like compartmented inro, which are suspended from the belt. The terminal of the suspension cord is a carved figure, netsuke, above which is a carved keeper, the ojime. The ojime, more than any other figure, is an expression of the owner's personality and usually takes the form of an animal. Items 393-399 are original Meiji period (1868-1912) ojime and can be distinguished from post 1912 examples by their quality. Each is completely hand carved and all but 394 signed by the artist. Each is pierced with a hole for the draw string. 1" height. Carved as a bat on a fruit with openwork foliage below. Applied black glass eyes. Back with two character signature. Lovely rich deep patina.
