Description:
This lovely okimono carved out of ivory shows the a high level of craftsmanship and quality. It portrays Hotei, one of the seven lucky gods of Japan.
Hotei is dressed in a traditional gown with his chest and round belly bare. We see him carrying a staff over his shoulder on which we find his traditional oversized satchel.
The fine facial features of the lucky god, his expression and his anatomical features such as his chubby figure and dimples in the face are apparent. The artist's signature is located on the bottom.
Also known as the Laughing Buddha, Hotei has a most friendly face with elongated earlobes and he is always cheerfully laughing. Hotei was originally a Chinese monk named Pu-tai, but he became an immortal when he crossed the sea to Japan. It is believed that rubbing his stomach will bring good luck. His name means 'cloth bag' or 'glutton' and he is the god of contentment and happiness.
