Description:
This handpainted miniature cup and saucer set is truly outstanding! Great quality and wonderful handpainting and gilding. Of course my initial reaction was that it had to be Meissen - had to be! Had to be because of the quality of the painting, the form, and the quality of the porcelain. So, as you can imagine I was disappointed to see that it was not. The mark identifies it be made by Hokutosha. No "made in Japan" marking so I believe this to be of very early manufacturer - probably late 19th or early 20th century - certainly pre Word War I. The saucer measures 2 5/8" wide by 3 1/8" long and 3/4" deep. The cup measures (including handle) 2 1/4" x 1 7/8" x 1 1/8" high. Condition of saucer is mint while the cup has a tiny area on the INSIDE of the cup near the rim that has an unglazed area that might have been a manufacturing defect or a very minor flake of the glaze. Priced accordingly.
