Description:
This magnificent Cheese Keeper is Majolica glazed Ironstone. The traditional Victorian Majolica as we know it is glazed Earthenware. The lead glazes were also applied to other ceramics such as Parian Ware or Ironstone as mentioned. The piece here is a fabulous rich cobalt blue with the raised floral decoration hand-painted in mat olive greens highlighted with hand-gilding. The butterfly finial serves as the handle. I've had this very design in a smaller version, a butter dish, in conventional Majolica. The visual impact of this Cheese Keeper is absolutely stunning! Far better than me photos convey. The condition is superb! The glaze is ultra shiny & unblemished. The gilding as fresh as the day it was done. Marked with the George Jones crescent mark which was introduced in 1878. There was a small rim chip to the underplate & slight wear to the edge of a butterfly wing which my restorer looked after. Well done, I can't even find it. This is a large piece at 11.75" DIA. and 8" high.
